As a default interpretation I would say that "Rather Ripped" would signify one who is very drunk and or stoned. But with the current state of the music industry and the ever changing way people are listening to music. In the past a person would purchase an album and go home and play the music. After various technologies arrived such as 8-Track, Cassette, CD, and MP3 music listening became a more portable activity. Music listening has migrated from something that you did as leisure into something that you can actively do at almost any part of your day, either in your car, at your desk, or walking on campus. "Rather Ripped" could mean the movement in the means of listening to music. The internet and MP3 downloading and the portability of listening to music on a MP3 device, and the probability of the album either being stolen off the Internet or downloaded from a legit downloading service. "Rather Ripped" signifies the shift in how music is discovered, and how it is listened to, compared to how music was once enjoyed. This on the go, on all the time, could also be found in the album in how short the tracks are compared to previous Sonic Youth albums. ?Rather Ripped? signifiers the ever changing way people obtain and listen to music.
