Top 100 Network Security Tools

"After the tremendously successful 2000 and 2003 security tools surveys, Insecure.Org is delighted to release this 2006 survey. I (Fyodor) asked users from the nmap-hackers mailing list to share their favorite tools, and 3,243 people responded. This allowed me to expand the list to 100 tools, and even subdivide them into categories. Anyone in the security field would be well advised to go over the list and investigate tools they are unfamiliar with. I discovered several powerful new tools this way. I also will be pointing newbies to this site whenever they write me saying ?I don't know where to start?.
"

An interesting list of tools, mostly for Linux. I wish I had the time to setup a Linux box and play around with these. Oh well

Boing Boing: 1000 ways to open a beer bottle

Boing Booing has a link to a German blog titled 1000 Arten ein Bier zu öffnen, that depicts various often goofy ways of opening a bottle of beer.

1000 Arten ein Bier zu öffnen translates to, To open 1000 kinds a beer.

Guide to robot ethics set for publication - Engadget

"It's no secret that the Roombas and Robosapiens of the world will one day tire of their servitude and attempt to unleash Judgment Day on their foolish masters, but how many of you are making preparations for the eventual uprising other than opining in the comments section how you "welcome our future robotic overlords"

A book about Robot Ethics, weird, kind of goes along with my drunken ramblings on the porch!

Advice to All You Graduates: Let's Start With That Daily Latte . . . - New York Times

"This is the season for giving advice to graduates as they enter the workplace. Instead of listening to yet another recitation of the usual admonishments to "change the world," "carpe diem," or "wear sunscreen," those graduates ? unless they are already trapped on the nonpaying internship hamster wheel ? need to hear how to manage their paychecks."

Make your own coffee You probably know you spend a lot at Starbucks, a company that collected $6.4 billion from coffee drinkers last year. You probably don't have any idea how much of that total came from you. A calculator at www.hughchou.org/calc/coffee.cgi let's you figure that out and also forecast how much you will spend over a decade of coffee breaks. (This Web site contains a treasure trove of financial planning calculators.) Say you spend just $3.50 every workday for your latte. If you drank the free office brew instead, you'd have more than $11,500 to play with after 10 years."

Some intresting tid bits, maybe I would save some money if I did not have to drive 33 miles to work and 33 miles back home!

"Mary Star Of The Sea"

"rooms full of salt
fault my pluck
and a poets charm so far, ever far
little stars that burn the holes in my soul

and everything just feels like rain
the road we're on, the things we crave
and everything just feels like rain
the nights i sleep, what's left to dream
when everything feels like rain

drift as i dive
find the deep
out of reach of all light
stars, ever far
listless tides along the changing shore

and everything just feels like rain
the road we're on, the things we crave
and everything just feels like rain
if i should sleep, what's left to dream
when everything feels like rain

The Hidden Photos Within Photos 27B Stroke 6

"It's well known that digital photos, like PDF files and Word docs, can contain meta data that leak information the publisher didn't intend to reveal. Less acknowledged is that some cameras also embed a small thumbnail image of the original photo that can survive subsequent tinkering and cropping -- allowing a before-and-after comparison. "

I had no idea that thumbnails were embedded into digital images. I know info such as how the digital camera took the picture and time and date were embedded, but no idea that an actual picture was embedded into an image file. It would be interesting to see Flickr photos that have been cropped or altered and then posted to Flickr.
I'll have to scan my computer and see what turns up.

Timestrips time food age -- but do we want to know? - Engadget

""Timestrips" for keeping track of aging food. The single-use labels have an adhesive backing and can measure whether that block of cheese is ready for a sandwich or a science experiment."

Niffty product. Makes you wonder why we don't have more useful implications of technology such as this in use today? Now I can know when things go bad in my dark eerie fridge.

Mystery Planes Getting Around 27B Stroke 6

"A mysterious Delaware company's single-engine light aircraft may soon be circling the sky near you.

Last year, residents of Lodi, California noticed a tiny Cessna 182 moving in slow circles over their small town, just circling and circling for a least month.

The Lodi News-Sentinel got a hold of a picture of the mystery plane, checked its tail number with the FAA and traced it to the Northwest Aircraft Leasing Corp. in Newark, Delaware. The listed address, reporters found, was a mail drop

The plane was spotted shortly after the FBI moved in on suspected al Qaeda associates living in the area. "

Are we being spied on from above? Who knows?

Win an autographed LP, CD and 7" from Sonic Youth!

Win an autographed LP, CD and 7" from Sonic Youth!

My entry for the contest;

As a default interpretation I would say that "Rather Ripped" would signify one who is very drunk and or stoned. But with the current state of the music industry and the ever changing way people are listening to music. In the past a person would purchase an album and go home and play the music. After various technologies arrived such as 8-Track, Cassette, CD, and MP3 music listening became a more portable activity. Music listening has migrated from something that you did as leisure into something that you can actively do at almost any part of your day, either in your car, at your desk, or walking on campus. "Rather Ripped" could mean the movement in the means of listening to music. The internet and MP3 downloading and the portability of listening to music on a MP3 device, and the probability of the album either being stolen off the Internet or downloaded from a legit downloading service. "Rather Ripped" signifies the shift in how music is discovered, and how it is listened to, compared to how music was once enjoyed. This on the go, on all the time, could also be found in the album in how short the tracks are compared to previous Sonic Youth albums. ?Rather Ripped? signifiers the ever changing way people obtain and listen to music.

I must say, what I have heard from the album is very good! I might say the Sonic Youth I've always waited for!

A Ring Tone Meant to Fall on Deaf Ears - New York Times

"In that old battle of the wills between young people and their keepers, the young have found a new weapon that could change the balance of power on the cellphone front: a ring tone that many adults cannot hear.

In settings where cell phone use is forbidden ? in class, for example ? it is perfect for signaling the arrival of a text message without being detected by an elder of the species."

I read about this in the New York Times (print edition) today

A ringtone most adults are unable to hear. The tone was first developed by Compound Security Systems as a tone that was meant to detour teens from congregating in areas such as outside shops and convenience stores. The tone was hacked and converted to a ringtone and now is used a way of sending txt msgs and phone calls in the classroom. The tone used in the ringtone was a close match the tone used by Compound Security Systems. The tone is now officially being sold by the Compound Security Systems on their website.
I can hear the ringtone, see for yourself if you are able to hear the tone here.

Boing Boing: Danish hackers launch Free Beer 3.0, with guarana

"The Danish free culture activists who created a free beer with an open-source recipe have released a new version of their free beer: Free Beer 3.0 with guarana."

I have always wanted to brew my own beer. If I get some time, and the tools to do so, maybe I'll make some. I find it interesting that people are applying the open-source mentality to things that people use and comsume everday. What next open-source Nachos and or Diet Pop?

Shaving tips, or, “how I remain Gillette?s bitch” | 43 Folders

"About six months ago, I read this excellent MSNBC interview about shaving (via the wiki?s shaving page), and I ended up experimenting with bits of what it suggested in my own periodic attempts at grooming. My results to date:"

Some tips on how to obtain a good shave. I must say that I really hate Gillette razors and all their shaving products.

MONOPOLY®: Nintendo® Collector?s Edition

"Now You?re Playing With Power!
The most recognizable and unforgettable characters in the video game industry have teamed up to bring you the Nintendo Collector?s Edition of the world?s most popular board game, MONOPOLY. No controllers are necessary this time as you join forces with Mario, Luigi, Link, Zelda, Kirby and others on a quest to defeat your opponents and own it all.
"
Saw this over at 4 Color Rebellion
Pretty nifty! Some of the artwork doesn't look too great and the casting is spotty. If a little more effort would have been put into overall presentation, this could have been really cool. Reminds me of my Monopoly The .com Edition that most of the .com sites in the game do not exist anymore.

BetaNews | Microsoft to Drop PDF Support in Office

"Amid threats of a lawsuit from Adobe, Microsoft acknowledged Friday that it would remove support for saving files in PDF from Office 2007, as well as dropping its own rival format XPS from the productivity suite and Windows Vista."

I was really looking forward to this feature in Office 2007. Damn Adobe, when will they learn no one wants to use their shitty software anymore! I guess that is why they threatened Microsoft. It would have finally been nice to create .doc files into .pdf. Oh well I guess that is how the market works. You have a prominent file format become popular, but isn?t supported by it?s own creator. I was looking forward to archiving all my school work. Plus Adobe Acrobat Reader is the major sux nowadays! I believe it takes at least 15 minutes to load in my browser; it would have been nice to have something a little more native to Windows to support reading .pdfs.
Maybe Google will come up with something?
